Healthcare Assistant

The Health Care Assistant program gives specialized training to look after the special needs of the elderly or those with physical and mental health issues residing in temporary or permanent home cares. Fundamental medical knowledge such as medical terminology, physiology, chronic conditions, patient record keeping and monitoring patient health are taught to the students. Students also learn how to respond to the emotional and physical needs of the patient, interact with the clients and their family members, promote physical and mental activity in the client, handle specialized equipment and assist with personal care and hygiene. In this field, practical work is very valuable in enabling students to become good communicators who are able to understand the needs of the clients by listening to them while providing them with excellent health care services. To this end, the program has a mandatory 360 hours of practicum which students must complete before they can be awarded the Health Care Assistant Diploma. Combining theoretical knowledge with practical work, students gain experience in a wide range of continuing health care sectors like hospices, retirement homes, group homes, home health care facilities and long term care facilities. Besides the Health Care Assistant Diploma other certifications like the Long-Term Geriatric Care Aid, Alzheimer's Certificate, CPR "C" Certificate Standard First Aid Certificate, Certificate Food Safe Level 1 Certificate and WHMIS Certificates are given to graduates of this program. The Career and Employment Strategies and Student Success Strategies courses facilitate the students in their search for a successful job.
