Committing yourself to your community and helping people kick their drug and alcohol abuse problems for good can be a rewarding career. The Addictions and Community Services Worker Diploma is for those students interested in a career in professional health care. Core skills such as writing, assessment, file management, counseling, communication and treatment planning are introduced to the students of this program. Addiction and Community Service workers are required to interact with health care professionals and their clients on a daily basis and these skills come in handy. In the medical area, students are exposed to studies in psychology, addiction prevention and intervention, pharmacology and others. A practicum of over 320 hours over 8 weeks is mandatory for students in a clinical setup. Our featured colleges also have a Career Employment Strategies course which covers aspects like job searching techniques, interviewing techniques, resume writing and job counseling services to help our students get placed. Employment opportunities are presented in alcohol and drug abuse centres, family social service centres, correctional and community mental homes, facilities for mentally and physically handicapped, senior care and group care homes. They also can provide community support in child and youth care homes, special needs centres and in family violence centres.
